Max's Seafood Cafe: The Ultimate Destination for Fresh Seafood in Gloucester City

Absolutely delicious from start to finish. The ambiance is cozy and comfortable. The mussels and calamari appetizers were so refreshing and the calamari wasn’t overly fried. The crab Mac and cheese had a really good amount of crab in it and was delicious. It wasn’t heavy and it was enough for me to bring some home. My husband had scallops with truffle mashed potatoes and asparagus which was to die for. Our server Karen was so friendly and very accommodating when it came to my allergies. We will definitely be coming back.

Driven by this place a few times before, but never went in. Finally went in Saturday. I sat at the bar by myself, but still had a great time. Alesha and John were super cool and helpful with the recommendations. Seafood pescatore with red spicy sauce was

Max's is a small bar/restaurant. The bar is separate from the dining room. The dining room is on the smaller side, but comfy. Service was very good. Looked like the bar tender was pulling double duty servicing tables as well. We began by ordering drinks, it was our anniversary. I ordered a Manhattan, as usual, my wife had a pomegranate martini. She enjoyed the martini, my Manhattan was OK, but nothing to write home about. I love my Manhattans. We both ordered soup and our entrée. I had the gumbo and my wife had the New England Clam Chowder. The gumbo was delish. Tons of andue sausage and the right amount of spice. My wife's chowder was good as well. It wasn't as heavy as others, and I don't think it has as much cream, which we both enjoyed. Interesting addition, the bread had a small dish of garlic butter. It was good, but I'm not a garlic butter fan. A bit later the entrée was served. My wife had the scallop special which came on a bed of capellini. I ordered the all you can eat mussels. My mussels were really good, served on linguini and 2 pieces of garlic bread. Once the first order of mussels were done, they brought out the appetizer mussels which didn't have the pasta and bread. The mussels were made fresh each time and were piping hot. My wife ended the nite with the espresso creme brulee. That was delicious. It has a sugar cinnamon glaze on the top that was really delicious. In all, a good night out. We spent about 55 - 60 dollars per person, not including tip.

I enjoyed dining here! My party arrived late. While waiting, the server was very attentive. Even after they arrived, she was attentive. At times, a little ro much. Perhaps she wa being mindful if closing time (2 hrs later), but we felt a little rushed. The food was delicious. I left my food but quickly returned to find the server had placed it on the bar. She must have known I would circle back. I look forward to dining here again soon, and having everyone on time!

Spicy. Red. Mussels. Goodness in a setting that has stayed authentic for over a hundred years. I really hesitated before posting this, because some local treasures deserve to be protected, and not get all kinds of traffic from all over the country; but this bar and restaurant has so many stories from so many generations, evident in the decor, the service, the live music, the neighbors meeting for a drink, and most of all, the incredible spicy red mussels.

The calamari and clams casino were amazing. The mussels in white were very good but I've also had better. I was most impressed with the steak as it was cooked perfectly and very tender. Their bread with garlic butter was also one of our faves. The other dishes were also tasty.

Want to eat in an olde tavern in Gloucester City NJ, this is the spot. Food got 4 stars because they did not have everything o. The menu which was a bit of a downer. However the food we had was top notch. Little high price.

Such beautiful architecture in this quaint restaurant. They have preserved the beauty by keeping the decor simple and relevant. There are so many good selections on the menu, so flavorful! I ordered the specials, fried green tomatoes and homemade gnocchi in a blush sauce. The server was kind and attentive, and the other staff so friendly. There is also a private parking lot across the street. Definitely will be back!
